KOROR (PICRC) —  On April 29, 2020, the Palau International Coral Reef Center decided to extend the closure of its facilities to the general public until May 31, 2020 as a preventive measure against Covid-19.

Even though there are no confirmed cases of the virus in Palau, the center’s decision follows a sense of responsibility to protect and limit risk to all partners, collaborators, guests and public at large.

Despite the center being closed to the general public, PICRC staff continue its diligent work towards conservation.

While researchers carry out research, the outreach staff has found innovative ways to reach out to the community via online.

At the same time, aquarium and maintenance departments are performing tasks that cannot be easily done with visitors in the facilities: such as painting, office-reorganizing, and giving deep cleansing to the aquarium’s tanks.

PICRC, will follow directives by the Office of the President, Ministry of Health, and the National Emergency Committee regarding mandatory actions to protect public health.

As such, when directives become less restrictive certain facilities might open earlier to the public before the aforementioned closure date.
