SUVA (Fiji Times/Pacnews) — Fijian police arrested 46 people for Covid-19 restriction breaches.

Of the 46, seven were arrested in Kadavu after they were found drinking alcohol at the Vunisea Jetty.

Commissioner of Police Brig. Gen. Sitiveni Qiliho said the seven cases of failure to comply with orders in Kadavu were part of the 31 arrests made in the Southern Division that included 24 arrests for social gathering breach.

He said five of the seven arrested were contractors working in Kadavu while two were from Vunisei Village.

The Western Division recorded 12 arrests, nine for social gathering, and three for curfew breach.

The Eastern Division recorded three cases of breach of social gathering restrictions.

He said the cases were reported in Korovou following the arrest of three men who were found drinking liquor at the Deepwater Settlement Korovou Wednesday afternoon.

Qiliho said one of the suspects, a 40-year-old lecturer residing in Nakasi, also allegedly tried to bribe a police officer by offering $500 to be released from custody. He also faces an additional charge of drunk driving, Qiliho said.

“While we are nearing the weekend, there’s a tendency for people to let their guard down and this must not happen. We cannot afford to be complacent and having a mindset that things are normal will be detrimental to the ongoing efforts of containing Covid-19,” Qiliho said.
