(MCS) — On Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, Mount Carmel School began its 2020-2021 School Year remotely through online learning.

As Mount Carmel School prepares to begin face-to-face classes on Aug. 31, 2020, the school has also begun offering more tech support for students and parents. In particular, two teachers, Filmah Buenaflor and Randee-Jo Barcinas-Manglona, will provide parents and students with direct support.

Mount Carmel School president Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD shared, “We understand and are cognizant that the use of online tools and platforms are still an adjustment for families, especially in the elementary grade-levels. To ensure families have adequate technical support, we have designated faculty members, Ms. Filmah Buenaflor and Ms. Randee-Jo Barcinas-Manglona as tech support for parents, students, as well as teachers.”

Buenaflor is an instructor for Mount Carmel School’s Algebra courses and Advanced Placement Computer Applications course. She has served as an educator for more than 17 years and has her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Portland, Oregon’s Concordia University. In addition to her years of teaching experience, Ms. Buenaflor has continued to use a variety of online tools for instruction since joining the MCS community in 2010. These tools include MIT App Inventor, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Google Applications.

For her part, Barcinas-Manglona is not only Mount Carmel School’s Composition and Creative Writing instructor but holds a master’s degree in Education Technology. Ms. Barcinas-Manglona has helped many of her colleagues during this transition to online learning.

Ms. Barcinas-Manglona shared, “The transition to online learning is challenging for everyone, even educators who have been teaching for many years. It’s fulfilling for me to be able to apply my skills with technology for our students, teachers, and parents.”

In addition to offering direct support to parents and students, the school is providing electronic devices to students as needed, has upgraded its internet connectivity and bandwidth, and has begun developing other tools to help with learning, such as G-Suite and Google Classroom.
