500 Sails announces new free swimming and sailing classes for February

SWIMMING (all at Guma Sakman):

• Gamsun Project - for youth K-12. Half-day Fridays, Feb. 7 & 28, 2 p.m.-4 p.m.

• Sirena Project - for women and girls ages 12+, Saturdays, Feb. 8, 15, 22, & 29, 10 a.m.-11 a.m.

• Lifeguard Swim Test Prep - for ages 15+, Tuesdays/Thursdays 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., Feb. 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27.

• Dolphin Club Saipan Monday Wakeup Swims - for adults (including beginners), Mondays, Feb. 10, 17, 24 at 6 a.m.

The classes are taught by volunteers, led by Coach Emma, who has had over 1, 200 students in her classes in the last three years. She is a kind, funny, and welcoming teacher for all levels.

• Lalåyak - A Beginners Guide to Sailing a Chamorro Canoe (all classes at Guma Sakman)

This is an intensive class made up of six lessons, three land and three sea, plus 10 practice sails led by captains-in-training. Classes take place on Saturdays, Feb. 8 through 22. Morning sessions are 9 a.m. to noon; afternoon sessions are 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

You must pass a swimming test on first day to participate. Test includes swimming to tank closest to Guma Sakman (about 400 meters) and back using any stroke without stopping; the test is untimed. In addition, you must tread water for one hour.

Class is team taught by Cecilio Raiukiulipiy and Pete Perez, along with other Lalåyak graduates.
