(CNMI Judiciary) — On April 6, 2020, the local Supreme Court issued an order adopting the child support guidelines. The guidelines provide uniformity in child support awards, maintenance of financial security, and a reduction in litigation and costs in child support disputes, as well as encourage equitable settlement between parents. The guidelines were drafted through the collective effort of a committee comprised of representatives from the judiciary, the Office of the Attorney General, Micronesian Legal Services, the Nutritional Assistance Program, and the Department of Commerce.

(Press Release) — Every year, the CNMI judiciary hosts contests to celebrate Law Day. Those include a poster contest capturing the Law Day theme for 3rd – 5th grade students, and an essay contest, often reflecting how the Law Day theme influences the CNMI, for 6th – 8th grade students. Awards are usually given on Law Day, held every year on May 1. The judiciary, along with the Office of the Governor, the House of Representatives, and the Senate, also hold a proclamation signing ceremony for Law Day, signifying the importance of the rule of law in our island communities.

(Press Release) — Beginning on April 6, 2020, the Settlement Fund office has reduced its service hours to half day. “We are still restricting access to the public and will continue to receive and respond to inquiries by phone, fax and email only from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday – Friday.” This schedule will be in effect until further notice. Fund staff will be available to assist members only by telephone, fax, or email.

The CARES Act includes provision for a refundable tax credit, widely known as a “stimulus check” that applies to the CNMI and other U.S. territories.
