FOR individuals who are discouraged by the pandemic from exercising, Gold's Gym personal trainer Jerry Diaz recommends walking.

"As we move into the rigorous 21st century and its technological lifestyle, we may transform into professional couch potatoes,” he said.

“If we begin to build a daily routine of spending a lot of time watching our favorite online shows, playing video games or engaged in a social media activity, we also end up performing fewer daily movements."

Diaz said it is important to balance one’s lifestyle with physical activities.

A life without any exercise may result in diabetes, heart and other diseases including cancer, he added.

He said like many other young people, his daughters prefer to stay home, watch their shows, listen to music or play games.

But Diaz and his wife are determined to set a good example by taking their children to the park for a 30-45 minute walk at least once or twice a week.

"It is a low-impact exercise and it’s fun when you walk together,” he said. “My kids enjoy taking pictures of the sunrise or sunset, so we set our walking sessions during those times."

He said walking also improves one’s mood.

For those who want to make walking part of their routine, Diaz recommends consulting a personal trainer first.

"A personal trainer knows that there are many levels of training intensity for individual fitness levels,” he added. “For example, I must conduct a physical assessment to observe an individual's current levels of performance. I will then create a fitness program appropriate to the individual’s physical abilities."

For those starting a fitness program, Diaz recommends light sessions.

“A progressive approach is highly important to avoid injuries and  ensure improvement throughout one’s fitness journey,” he said.
