A HEALTHY lifestyle requires  awareness and balance, Gold's Gym personal trainer Jerry Diaz said.

“It was a learning process for me,” he added. “In the beginning, I was a sponge. I wanted to learn everything that the fitness industry could offer. I wanted to prove to my family that this dream role was functional and beneficial professionally and personally."

As his experience as a personal trainer grew, the number of individuals seeking his help also increased.

“I was training clients, including professional athletes, and sharing social media content with the community,” Diaz said.

His caseload doubled. But he was also a public school teacher, and so he started neglecting his responsibilities as a father and husband at home.

"The system that my wife and I agreed to implement before I started this journey was put aside as I began to feed on the mindset that I had to keep up with social media. It felt like hoarding. More clients, more photos or business ads, but less time at home. It became a complicated situation,” Diaz said.

But with the help of his wife and amid the Covid-19 restrictions, he was able to balance his time as a  family man, educator and professional trainer.

"I realized that the favorable reactions on social media did not mean that I was a  better family man at home. It just meant that I became like a Pavlovian dog salivating at the prospect of getting a ‘reward’ on social media.”

Now that he is aware of the need for balance, Diaz said he  has become a better family man and  fitness trainer.

“Of course, it is easier said than done, but it can be done,” he added.

“As trainers, we have to remember that we are also a family member and a friend. We need a balanced mental state.”
