A FITNESS program must include a day of rest and low-intensity exercises, Gold's Gym personal trainer Jerry Diaz said.

These may include walking, yoga or swimming. Diaz prefers low-impact, blood circulation stimulation such as primal body weight vinyasa or an early morning walk on the Beach Road pathway with his family. “I want to make sure that I am consistently healthy and active throughout the year without breaking my body, and that includes my joints, my spine, and mental health. I have a hectic schedule — I must balance family time, Gold’s Gym client training, and teaching at school.”

As a gym instructor, Diaz' main challenge is persuading clients to take a break at least once a week and to avoid overtraining. “Some clients want to accelerate the process by expanding their program schedule,” he said. “But if an individual keeps training past his or her limit, it could lead to program breakdown and discouragement, which results in regression.”

Diaz said he advises his clients to stick to their program schedule patiently and consistently. Perseverance pays off, he added, and one avoids the wheel of success and failure.

Mary Urena is a Gold's Gym member whose workout program includes picking up trash and marine debris when she walks on the beach.

“Picking up trash can become a challenging workout when the load gets heavy and you have to carry it all the way to the trash bin,” said Urena, a Division of Coastal Resources Management coastal planner.

She added, “One thing I learned from college is that you need to take care of yourself to be able to care of our environment and vice versa. Our environment, like the beaches, provides us with recreation, aesthetic, food, and revenue.”
