REGULAR exercise is essential for everyone under normal circumstances. With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, staying fit remains crucial.

According to Nuvance Health, a non-profit health system located in the mid-Hudson Valley region in New York and Western Connecticut, regular exercise can boost one’s immune system, prevent weight gain, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve sleep quality.

Of course, a strong immune system will not prevent you from contracting Covid-19, but having a weakened immune system may increase the risk of severe illness.

Research shows that regular, moderate-intensity exercise has immune-boosting benefits that may help your body fight off infections, Nuvance Health stated.

“Exercise may prevent weight gain: Exercise can help you burn extra calories caused by dietary changes and offset the effects of sedentary activities.

“Exercise reduces stress and anxiety: Exercise is a proven mood-booster and can help adults reduce stress levels and build emotional resilience.

“Exercise improves sleep: There is evidence that suggests regular exercise helps you fall asleep faster and improves sleep quality — and getting a good night’s sleep has also been found to boost your immune system.”

Exercise could ultimately aid in the fight against Covid-19, and “may be especially beneficial for older adults and people with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis, or heart disease. Regular exercise can help to improve balance, flexibility, strength, mobility, and cardiovascular health. Plus, it can boost energy and overall well-being,” Nuvance Health stated.

For those who want to use equipment or exercise indoors, Gold's Gym is open every day: 5:30  a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Gold's Gym Saipan general manager Tyce Mister said they have stepped up their game to ensure a safe environment.  “We've been cleaning more frequently the high touch areas, and we've removed some equipment to create more space. At the close of business every day we disinfect with an electrostatic sprayer, and we've increased the number of hand sanitizing stations and cleaning stations around the gym. Our code of conduct requires the wearing of masks and the disinfecting of equipment after use,” Mister said.
