NMI Rollers Basketball Association head coach Joe Diaz, said the strength of the team is in the hands of each player.

Teamwork is important to the success of the team, he added. “Teamwork is crucial when it comes to basketball. That’s why we start and end practice with the whole team saying, ‘One heart, one team’ in every huddle. Either before practice, after practice, during games, or even after an event. We must act as one in order to be successful.”

While it is very important to have a group of talented athletes, it is also crucial to foster teamwork, Diaz said. “We encourage our players to bond with each other,” he added.

As for the coaches, they try to interact with the players on and off the court. Coach Diaz said a team is like a family. “So I try to connect with our players either it be about basketball, family relationships, education. It is important that I play my part as a mentor or a father figure to my players. At times, Coach Vern and I would also invite the kids to the movies or we eat dinner at Shirley’s Coffee Shop. We try to jell with the players through off-court activities.”
