JOE Diaz, head coach and founder of the NMI Rollers Basketball Association, will hold open tryouts for all CNMI basketball players. Those chosen will play in an exhibition match against the Guam National Team.

“We have been invited to participate in a tune-up match against the Guam National Team at the University of Guam Field House to help them get ready for their match against Korea,” Diaz said. Korea earlier postponed the game against Guam for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers because of the coronavirus outbreak, he added.

He said the head coach of the Guam National Team, EJ Calvo, invited the CNMI to play against them. “It’s an opportunity for our players to hone their skills,” Diaz added.

Coach James Lee will oversee the CNMI players’ strength and conditioning. Coach Mike Mercado will record statistics for every individual player while Coach Chris Sablan will be in charge of video analysis during the tryouts. Each player will learn their strength and weaknesses, and how to address those weaknesses, Diaz said.

The team captain of the Guam National Team, William Stinnett, said the game between Guam and the CNMI will be held in October at the University of Guam Field House. Stinnett will be working alongside Diaz to coordinate and finalize this event.

“We are excited to have a team from Saipan come out and showcase their skills against our national team,” Stinnett said. “It will, for sure, be a show at the UOG Field House. On top of the that, we will stream the games live and advertise the event. We expect a full house!”

Diaz said the tryouts will be held from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday starting March 17 at the Kobler gym across from Coral Ocean Point. The final roster for Team Marianas will be completed by May 15.
