BLUE Haus and Blue Eagle A+ defeated their respective opponents to win the championships in the masters and open divisions of the United Filipino Organization-IT&E Basketball League on Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Against the Blue Eagles, Shirley’s Jack Aranda and Gerlad Flores buckled up on defense, stealing possession of the ball and converting in transition. The Blue Eagles were scoreless in the opening minutes, but Schmidt finally breezed through Shirley’s wall of defenders, scoring 8 points, while team-mate Lizama tallied 6 points. Still, Shirley’s remained on top at the end of the first quarter, 28-27.

In the second canto, Shirley’s Matt Duenas was relentless as he pounced his way to the basket with ease giving his team the extra cushion. However, the Blue Eagles answered every bucket that Shirley’s delivered with Schmidt and Demapan torching their way in the paint and scoring a total of 16 points. Team-mate Basa, for his part, sank two consecutive triples. But Shirley’s Matt Duenas scored a total of 12 markers to give his team a two-point lead, 57-55, as the first half ended.

In the opening of the second half, the Blue Eagles’ De Guzman, who was in foul trouble, assisted Schmidt defensively as they combined for a total of seven steals and converted in transition. Shirley’s was nowhere to be found as the Blue Eagles soared in the third canto, 80-68.

Shirley’s was simply no match against the Blue Eagles defense. Schmidt stopped every break Shirley’s could make and scored a game high of 24 points and 17 steals while team-mates De Guzman and Lizama contributed 14 and 16 points. The Blue Eagles clinched the open division title in a resounding victory against Shirley’s Coffee Shop, 100-82, and Schmidt was named regular season MVP and finals MVP.
