Loving Hands spill Star Water, 67-64

LOVING Hands outlasted Star Water in overtime, 67-64, on Monday in the 2020 One Pacific Promotional Basketball League at the Civic Center Basketball Court in Oleai.

It was anyone ball’s game as both teams exchanged baskets throughout the four quarters. In the opening quarter, Star Water gained control with Michael Cabanas and Darwin Barbo scoring a total of 7 points to end the first canto with their team ahead by one point, 9-8.

In the second quarter, Loving Hands retaliated by defending well and seizing opportunities to run in transition. Jhun Tabora and Jude Tengco combined for 8 points. Star Water’s Barbo, for his part, controlled the boards, and this allowed his team to match Loving Hands’ output. Barbo and Esdralon each contributed 6 points as the second quarter ended in a tie, 26-26.

Star Water managed to gain control in the opening of the third quarter as twin towers Barbo and Santos asserted their strength and height. Barbo was scoreless but Esdralon unloaded 8 points including two consecutive triples. Toward the end of the third canto, Loving Hands obtained a one-point, 42-41.

Entering the fourth and final quarter, Barbo and Esdralon played smart ball as they utilized their strength and power. Hands and elbows collided but no calls were made by the referees. The game then went down to the wire, 58-58. Loving Hands had several opportunities to win the game, but Adi Tabora could not connect with his four free throws, sending the game to overtime, 58-58.

Adi Tabora then showed heart and determination as he got back on his feet and sank a cold blooded three-point-shot with 3.5 seconds left to clinch victory for his team, 67-64. Adi Tabora was named Player of the Game with 13 markers. Elmer Esdralon led Star Water with 23 points with Darwin Barbo as his backbone, scoring 18 points.

In the second game of the night, Lakay led by Roland Williams, who scored 28 points, bested Saipan Warriors, 61-49. Chris Lilis, who contributed 13 points, was named Player of the Game for his defensive skills.
