San Nicolas, a veteran in the competition, continues to make a name for himself, winning his second gold medal in a row. He entered the 96kg weight-class and snatched 110kg/242lbs, and a Clean & Jerk of 145kg/319lbs to power past the rest of the competition.

But San Nicolas said he did better last year. “This year I totaled 10kg less than last year. For a little over five months, I was rehabbing and at the same time training through a shoulder injury I suffered in July, so it was a setback, but not that far back.”

He said “the competition was good, and I felt that I needed to compete win or lose.”

Leo Apelo, who made his second appearance in the competition, showed improvement by topping his weight-class of 89kg. He snatched a total weight of 115kg/253lbs, and a Clean & Jerk of 150kg/330lbs to bag the gold medal.

San Nicolas said he will continue to train for the next competition. “Right now, I’m looking at Nauru which will host the Oceania Championship in April. We’ll see what happens. Hopefully I’ll make it there.”
