(Office of the Governor) — In a memorandum to all department and activity heads and employees on Thursday, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, is Election Day and thus a legal holiday in the Commonwealth.  (See 1 CMC § 6508.)

Accordingly, he said, all non-essential government workers are granted holiday leave on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.

“Heading into next week,” he added, “please be advised that government offices will be operating under an abbreviated schedule, due to the austerity Monday and two successive legal holidays.”

The schedule of the CNMI government for next week will be as follows:

  • Monday, Nov. 2, 2020 – Austerity Day: Employees on an austerity schedule do not report to work.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020 – Election Day: CNMI Legal holiday; all government offices closed.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020 – Citizenship Day: CNMI Legal holiday; all government offices closed.
  • Thursday and Friday, Nov. 5-6, 2020 - Regular work days.

“Despite Nov. 3, 2020 being an election day and a holiday,” the governor said, “I remind everyone that early voting is available and encourage everyone to take advantage so as not to cause crowding on Election Day.  Taking advantage of early voting is the safest method of voting during this Covid-19 pandemic because it reduces the risk of infection.”

Finally, he said, “I encourage everyone to vote in the upcoming election.  Voting is a cherished right and the cornerstone of our democracy. Stay vigilant and stay safe Marianas.”
