THE Public School System will observe its first austerity Friday for the new school year this week.

Although Public Law 21-35 or the Fiscal Year 2021 Appropriations Act designates Mondays as “austerity days,” the Board of Education voted last week to maintain Friday as the austerity day for school year 2020-2021.

In his memorandum following the BOE meeting, Education Commissioner Alfred B. Ada informed all locally funded employees of PSS that since austerity Monday was already observed on Oct. 6, the next austerity for PSS will be on Friday, Oct. 16.

Mi-Fi distribution

In other news, Commissioner Ada is urging parents and students to reach out to principals and teachers for instructions when using MiFi for their online classes.

During a press conference on KKMP radio hosted by Gary Sword on Friday, Ada said PSS was still distributing Mi-Fi units to students.

He said PSS is handing out one Mi-Fi unit per household.

“That’s  how we give out  Mi-Fi’s, and we are also ready to show parents how to use them,” Ada added.

“I just want to inform the community that if you are not sure how to operate or navigate a Mi-Fi unit you can always reach out to principals and teachers. They are always willing to give out instructions — they will give you video recordings that provide step by step instructions.

“I realize it can be very nerve- wracking because it is new, but once you get the hang of it you’ll come to realize that ‘wow, I can really learn a lot from virtual learning,’” Ada said.
