TWO individuals from the CNMI earned their commission as second lieutenants in the United States Army on Saturday, according to Lt. Col. Tom Anderson, professor of military science at the University of Guam.

They are Henry Sandbergen and Justine Mallari.

Sandbergen graduated from Tinian High School and joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program for four years while studying at UOG.

Mallari is an engineer officer of the Guam National Guard. He graduated from Holy Rosary Academy in Lubao, Pampanga province in the Philippines and Northern Marianas College.

“The cadets’ ROTC courses focused primarily on developing their leadership skills, with a particular emphasis on the real-world application of the leadership lessons taught and discussed in the classroom,” Anderson said in a statement.

He added that the cadets have also undergone multiple summer internships and military training courses in the U.S.

In addition, they went on annual field training exercises and cultural exchange events with cadets and military leaders from foreign countries, he said.
