TO comply with the reimposition of stricter health protocols due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Fitbeat program has been temporarily suspended, first lady Diann Torres said.

The free physical fitness program was launched by Mrs. Torres and second lady Wella Palacios in July last year, and was held at Garapan Central Park every day except Sunday.

But Mrs. Torres said Fitbeat sessions will resume once they come up with a new arrangement that complies with the health protocols.

In her remarks during the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Saipan at the Hyatt on Tuesday, she said hundreds of individuals on Saipan and Tinian regularly participate in the Fitbeat sessions.

“The program is doing good,” she said, adding that there were only 21 people who attended the first session at the Carolinian Utt last year.

She said they now have plans to extend the program to Rota.

The first lady at the same time encouraged Rotarians to join the program, which, she added, aligns with the club health and wellness programs that include diabetes prevention.

Mrs. Torres said Fitbeat will continue to grow because of the dedication and commitment of the people who support it.

She expressed her appreciation to certified fitness instructor Joel Vallega for his dedication. “We really need a coach, and without Joel, our program would not last as long,” she said.

She noted that Vallega has also trained some of the participants so they, too, could conduct Fitbeat sessions.

A Fitbeat promoter, Vince Cabrera of the Commonwealth Healthcare Center diabetes program, said the physical fitness program motivates its participants to lead a healthy lifestyle. “It’s for everyone, young or old,” he added.
