THE Marianas High School Dolphin Battalion on Sunday held a change of command ceremony, which saw the promotion of C/LTC Jose Reyes to battalion commander this year.

The battalion commander is the most prestigious position in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Command or JROTC program, MHS Army instructor SFC Albert Lujan said.

He said the ceremony had been rescheduled several times because of the pandemic restrictions.

It was supposed to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 25, but because of the reimplementation of strict rules regarding social gatherings, Lujan said the Dolphin Battalion decided to conduct the ceremony on Sunday afternoon at MHS. Only the officers and their parents were present in the event.

With social distancing in place, Lujan said they are still looking for ways to perform drills that comply with the Covid-19 safety measures.

“The tools that we will use are going to be different, and will take a lot of dedication,” he said, adding that most of the JROTC classes will be done online.

He added that the real challenge is instilling discipline and responsibility among cadets. “You cannot teach discipline online. We will have to figure out how to work on it.”

The new battalion commander, C/LTC Jose Reyes said his leadership will focus on “improving our communication in order to accomplish all our plans for this year and that includes enhancing the JROTC class online.”

His predecessor, former C/LTC Daryll de Luna, said he has complete confidence in Reyes and the other officers.

“I believe that the pandemic will not hinder them from what they want to do this school year,” de Luna said.

The other new officers of the Dolphin Battalion include:

  • C/MAJ Jessica Liu, Dolphin Battalion executive officer
  • C/CPT Denzel Gatbonton, adjutant officer
  • C/1LT Jaibelle Nelmida, security and intelligence officer
  • C/MAJ Lance Asistores, operations and training officer
  • C/CPT Eejai Metran, supply and logistics officer
  • C/1LT Christina Kim, public relations officer
  • C/CSM Teody Valenzuela, responsible for training enlisted cadets and assisting the battalion commander to reach the goals of the battalion
