THE Saipan mayor's office completed distributing house numbers in Koblerville last week.

Special assistant to the mayor Henry Hofschneider said this week, Janice Celis, a staff member of the newly created street naming and addressing division, and Frank Camacho of HK Pangelinan & Associates, the project contractor, are distributing house numbers on Tun Thomas Sablan Road from the Pacific Islands Club to the Mobil gas station.

On Tuesday, the team started its operation in San Antonio.

Since the project’s implementation in July, Hofschneider said they have been getting lots of positive feedback, although some people have expressed concern about the delay in the distribution of numbers.

But he said those who already have house or office numbers can now use them for official transactions, including home deliveries involving private couriers.

"We encourage people to start using their designated home or office address numbers as soon as they get them," he added.

These will allow the U.S. Postal Services to build its delivery system on island, Hofschneider said.

The home and office numbers will also help law enforcement officers and emergency responders in case of emergencies, he added.

He said some people are not interested in getting house numbers. "It’s understandable — some people sometimes are resistant to change or to new things, or maybe they were just having a bad morning when we talked with them," Hofschneider said. "We respect that; we won't require them to put up a number."

The  mayor's office, for its part, may conduct an information drive to explain the importance of the house numbering project.
