GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres said his administration is now determining how the CNMI can benefit from President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of additional Covid-19 assistance.

This includes aid for renters and homeowners, continued student loan payment relief, deferring payroll tax obligations, and authorizing the Other Needs Assistance Program for major disaster declarations related to the pandemic.

During a press briefing on KKMP radio Tuesday, Torres said assistance to renters and homeowners, in particular, can “definitely help…our people here.”

He said he intends to find out how many renters and homeowners need help; how much funding is needed to aid them; and what the guidelines are.

“I remember there were talks about evictions [and] talks about having a law to prevent evictions, but then homeowners were also making an issue about their mortgages,” the governor said. “So, when you have an executive order like this, to help renters and homeowners, [it may] help our people across-the-board.”

The governor said once his administration obtains more details about these and other applicable federal programs, he will “notify the community as to what the next steps are moving forward.”
