Public hearing today on resolution opposing increased military presence

THE House Committee on Federal and Foreign Affairs will  hold a public hearing today, Tuesday, on House Joint Resolution 21-8.

Introduced by Rep. Sheila Babauta, the joint resolution is requesting Gov. Ralph DLG Torres to oppose any increase in “destructive military training and testing in the Northern Mariana Islands.”

Chaired by Rep. Luis John Castro, the committee has requested the presence of the following persons at the public hearing:

  • Mayor of Saipan
  • The chair and members of the Saipan Municipal Council
  • Chairman of the Saipan Legislative Delegation
  • Special Assistant for Military Affairs
  • Administrator of the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality
  • Secretary of the Department of Lands and Natural Resources

Members of the general public are also welcome to attend the public hearing and submit written testimonies.

The U.S. Navy recently announced that it has decided on Alternative 2 for the Mariana Islands Training and Testing activities.

The Navy said it made its decision after taking into consideration its strategic and operational needs, as well as the potential impacts the training and testing may have on human, natural, and cultural environments.

The Navy also said that it has likewise taken into consideration public comments received from elected officials, government agencies, organizations, and the public.
