THE Public School System is having a hard time recruiting nurses, PSS federal programs manager Tim Thornburgh said during a recent Board of Education meeting.

“We are trying hard to recruit nurses,” he said, adding that there was a private firm that expressed interest in providing nurses, but it backed out the last minute.

PSS has allocated $550,000 to hire 22 nurses, on a part-time basis, for 10 months. The funding came from the education stabilization fund provided by the federal CARES Act.

If PSS cannot hire nurses, “that money will be reprogrammed,” Thornburgh said.

PSS has also allocated $20,400 to buy 255 thermal wand thermometers; $510,858 for school sanitation; and about $1.3 million for the teachers’ online/remote learning, which is part of the hybrid learning approach that will be implemented by PSS when its new school year starts on Sept. 8.

Thornburgh said he is looking forward to the second education program that is in the works now in Washington, D.C.

This education program is one of the components in the second relief package  or the HEROES Act, which has been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

For its part, the U.S. Senate has passed the HEALS Act.

“There’s going to be a second educational stabilization fund…that looks very promising and we will be following this carefully,” Thornburgh said.

He added that PSS can again receive $23 million education stabilization funds or more.

He said under the HEALS Act, the U.S. Department of Education may receive around $70 billion for K-12 education, $30 billion for post-secondary education and $5 billion for the governors’ discretion.

But Thornburgh said the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate must reconcile their two relief bills before school districts across the nation can benefit from a second education stabilization fund.
