THE Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. and the Governor’s Covid-19 Task Force are working on a new protocol for travelers arriving on island.

“The plan is to make sure that we get the messaging out so individuals know what to expect when they travel into the CNMI,” CHCC Chief Executive Officer Esther Muna said, adding that the new protocol will be announced in mid-August

She said they will look at the positivity and hospitalization rates of the jurisdictions from where the travelers came.

“Let's say you're coming from Florida [a high-risk area] and you're traveling to Korea and then to Saipan. Even though Korea may be a low-risk area, the fact that you came all the way from Florida — [is] one  of the things that we need to consider. That traveler should spend at least 14 days in quarantine in Korea before he or she  flies to the CNMI,” Muna said.

“In a way, we are already implementing that when we look at the high-risk and low-risk zones. We consider those in making decisions  and whether or not to require an individual to stay at Kanoa Resort  or self-quarantine at home,” she added.

Passengers will still be required to undergo two Covid-19 tests under the new protocol.

According to the CHCC dashboard, 16 Covid-19 cases have been identified through airport screening.

“There’s a reason why we do the testing on their arrival and on the fifth day. We have identified cases on both ends. This is how this virus works — you can be getting it too early or later on,” Muna said.

As of Tuesday, CHCC had reported 40 Covid-19 cases and two deaths since March 28, 2020.

On Guam, there had been 349 confirmed cases with five deaths and 53 active cases. Of those cases, 300 were classified as civilians and 49 were military servicemembers.
