House committee to conduct budget hearings

THE House Committee on Ways and Means on Monday announced that it will be conducting multiple hearings on the FY 2021 budget.

Chaired by Rep. Ivan Blanco, the committee has scheduled hearings for the Public School System,  Northern Marianas College, the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation, the Marianas Visitors Authority, the judicial branch, the Department of Public Safety (Saipan), the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services (Saipan), the Department of Public Works, the Saipan Mayor’s Office, the Tinian municipality, and the Rota municipality.

Hearings for  PSS and  NMC will be held on Monday, July 6, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

Hearings for CHCC and MVA will be held on Tuesday, July 7, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

Hearings for the judicial branch and DPS will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

Hearings for DFEMS and  DPW are scheduled for Thursday, July 9, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

The hearing for the Saipan Mayor’s Office will be held on Monday, July 13, at 10 a.m.

The hearing for the Tinian municipality will be held on Tinian, Tuesday, July 14, at 2 p.m., while the hearing for the Rota municipality will be held on Rota and is set for Thursday, July 16, at 2 p.m.

The other public hearings will be held in the House Chamber of the legislative building on Capital Hill.

Social distancing and the use of face masks during the hearings will be practiced.

The members of the committee are Rep. Ralph Yumul, House Floor Leader John Paul Sablan, Reps. Joseph Leepan Guerrero, Roman Benavente, Antonio Borja, Joel Camacho, Luis John Castro, Jose Itibus, Donald Manglona, Janet Maratita, Marco Peter, and Christina Sablan.

Members of the general public are welcome to attend these hearings, and to provide comments.
