THE Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality and the Department of Lands and Natural Resources-Division of Fish and Wildlife have granted a community volunteer’s request to transfer beach sand from the north side of the Sugar Dock pavilion.

Max Aguon said there is a need to “level the sand” in preparation for the upcoming novena of the Santa Maria Imaculada at Sugar Dock.

In an interview, Aguon said more sand is needed in certain areas where vehicles usually get stuck.

“Almost every day we help push out a vehicle stuck in those areas,” he added.

The novena will start on Monday, June 29 and end on July 7, he said.

Division of Coastal Resources Management Director Janice E. Castro granted the request for earth moving activities with some conditions:

Sand, gravel or other aggregates from the beach areas as well as beach strand vegetation, shells or marine life from the beach area and along the shoreline cannot be removed.

Moreover, the earth moving activity should not impede public access to and along coastal waters.

In addition, to prevent shoreline erosion, all vehicles will be parked in a designated parking area and no vehicles are allowed on the beach.

DFW Director Manuel Pangelinan, in his letter, asked Aguon to supervise the work activity to ensure compliance.

Pangelinan said the excess beach sand on the Sugar Dock road, which intersects the boat ramp, may be transferred to the south side of the Sugar Dock pavilion.

But “no beach sand may be moved, transferred, used for personal gain, and the sand to be moved or transferred is strictly to be used to level the sand on the south side of the Sugar Dock pavilion,” Pangelinan said.

Aguon said he expects the regulatory agencies to start the earth moving activity today, Monday, at Sugar Dock.
