THE virtual CNMI Liberation Day celebration on the Fourth of July will be highlighted by a family float display, Mayor David M. Apatang said.

The floats will be built at home by participating families who will then submit a five-minute video of their entries to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The float competition is for families only, and each entry must reflect the island people’s resilience in the face of Yutu and the Covid-19 pandemic. It should also carry the theme of this year’s Liberation Day: “Strength in Unity – Marianas Strong.”

Moreover, at least 50% of the float should be made from recycled materials.

On Tinian, Liberation 2020 project director Eric Reyes said they already have one entry for the family float competition.

“Hopefully, we can have more participants,” he said, adding that the deadline for submission of entries is on June 28.

The first prize for the family float competition is $2,500; second prize, $2,000; third prize, $1,500; fourth prize, $1,000; and fifth prize, $500.

On Liberation Day, there will be a motorcade on Saipan starting at 1 p.m., and the assembly area is the former Mariana Resort.

After the motorcade, a virtual program will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. featuring local singers and dancers performing virtually.

Mayor Apatang said this year’s Liberation Day theme is about “the people of the Marianas who are always coming together in order to accomplish something, and that’s what keeps us strong.”

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the mayor said the people in the Marianas are working together for a better future.

Liberation Day commemorates the anniversary of the release of civilians from protective custody of the U.S. military at Camp Chalan Kanoa on July 4, 1946.
