SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang said he will ask the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation to appropriate $200,000 for the Saipan street-naming and addressing project.

He said the funds are for the acquisition of a computer and monitoring program for the Geographic Information System.

The mayor’s office will also hire a GIS specialist and technician to help administer the program, he added.

“Hopefully we can finish the project this year,” Apatang said, noting that Gov. Ralph DLG Torres recently signed Saipan Local Law 21-14, which authorizes the mayor’s office “to develop and implement the Saipan street-naming and addressing master map.”

The new local law affirms the Saipan street-name master map approved by the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation in December 1998.

The master map lists 32 different themes that were the bases for the street names.

The themes include names of food, airlines, Carolinian leaders, recreational fishing, tourism, colors, ancient Chamorros, vines, inland trees, fruits and vegetables, flowers, island leaders, islands, wetland trees, reefs, sites and attractions, discovery vessels, fish, first names, coconut trees, medicinal plants, island history, birds, coastal plants, flower trees, marine, insects, the Talabwog tradition, war relics and animals.
