SENATOR Teresita A. Santos is asking the Department of Lands and Natural Resources to open the deer season on Rota one month earlier.

Currently, the hunting season for the deer starts on Sept. 1 and ends on Nov. 30.

In her letter to DLNR Secretary Anthony T. Benavente, Santos proposed a new hunting season this year that begins on Aug. 1 and ends on Dec. 31, 2020.

The senator said numerous government and private sector employees have been furloughed and terminated amid the Covid-19 pandemic and are struggling to meet their financial responsibilities while dealing with the high cost of living on Rota.

“These are difficult times we face,” she said. “Our people have proven their resiliency, but providing help to assist our families during these uncertain times is critically necessary and justified.”

Santos said DLNR enforcement officers should continue to ensure that all rules and regulations are adhered to; that no hunting will be permitted within designated conservation areas of Rota, Liyo and Sabana; and that only permitted individuals may hunt.

She said she has been informed by numerous farmers that the deer population on Rota has grown and is causing major crop damage.

“I turn to you and your experts to assess the current situation and if warranted, I ask for your assistance and understanding in opening the Rota deer season earlier so that families on Rota can avail themselves of deer meat for personal consumption,” she said.
