THE House of Representatives on Wednesday honored the life and legacy of Jose R. Lifoifoi, NMI Refaluwasch leader, House speaker in the Fifth Legislature, and member of the leadership in the Third Legislature.

Through House Resolution 21-30, the lawmakers also extended their sincere condolences and sympathies to the family of the late former lawmaker.

Lifoifoi passed away on May 18, 2020 at the Commonwealth Health Center. He was 83.

The House resolution was authored by Rep. Sheila J. Babauta, who, on behalf of her colleagues, presented a framed copy to the family of the former speaker.

Rep. Joseph Leepan T. Guerrero, who knew Lifoifoi in a personal capacity, also expressed his sympathies to the immediate family of the late former lawmaker and, alongside Rep. Babauta, presented the Lifoifoi family with the first official seal from the First Legislature.

“He will always be a part of me, and I will never forget you guys,” he said to the Lifoifoi family, who, in turn, thanked the House members for their sentiments.

During his time as a public servant, Lifoifoi also served as chairman of the United Micronesia Development Association, chairman of the Commonwealth Ports Authority board of directors, and the Republic of Palau honorary consul to the CNMI.

Leaders from across the Micronesian region have condoled with the Lifoifoi family since his passing.

Lifoifoi is survived by his wife Cecilia, his children, Joe, Remedio, Ignacia, Angel, John, and Paterno, and several grandchildren.
