(DPS) — On Thursday, June 11, 2020, at about 1:26 a.m., the Department of Public Safety  received a 911 call reporting an attempted burglary, in Chalan Kanoa. Police units were dispatched to the scene.

Police met with the caller who stated that a male individual had tried to make his way into the victim's home before realizing that the victim was home and awake. The victim told officers that the suspect fled on foot and was described as heavyset, short in height, with short hair, shirtless, wearing gray shorts, and barefoot.

The officer notified dispatch as another officer made his way to a neighboring residence. Officers recognized Jody Kaipat matching the description given earlier eating near the doorway. Officers told Kaipat that they wanted to ask him a few questions outside the residence. As officers were interviewing Kaipat, the victim positively identified Kaipat as the suspect who was trying to gain access into the home. Kaipat was detained as officers were interviewing the victim.

The victim stated that he was in his home when he noticed an individual trying to gain access into the vehicles outside by checking if the doors were left unlocked. Shortly after, Kaipat walked towards the victim’s front door and tried to open it when the victim asked the suspect, “What’s happening here?” Kaipat then fled on foot before the police arrived.

At about 1:44 a.m., Kaipat was placed under arrest for disturbing the peace and attempted burglary. He was cleared at the Kanoa Resort quarantine site before being transported to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained.
