A LAWMAKER has expressed concern over a video that appears to be promoting spearfishing in the Northern Islands.

The video can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sIUB2EZ5rs

In an interview on Wednesday, Rep. Joel Camacho said: “We don’t discourage anyone from visiting the Northern Islands.”

But he said he and the residents are concerned about harvesting resources in the Northern Islands.

He said there are federal and local regulations in place and anyone who wants to go to the Northern Islands for fishing activities should go through the proper legal procedures.

Camacho has set up a meeting with Northern Islands Mayor Vicente B. Santos and Department of Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Anthony Benavente to discuss the video.

His office, Camacho said, is also trying to communicate with the group that produced the video.

“One has to get permits here before going there for any activity,” he added. “I believe Guam has the same thing. If you have to go there for the same activity, you have to avail yourself of some kind of permit. Again, we are not discouraging anyone from going there, but we encourage them to go through the process like everybody else,” Camacho said.
