THE renovation of the Tinian Children’s Park has begun thanks to the U.S. Navy Seabees and IT&E, Mayor Edwin Aldan said.

Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5 built a jungle gym, repaired and rejuvenated the restroom facility, and cleared the children’s park of debris that had piled up after Tinian was hit with successive typhoons.

IT&E donated the playground equipment.

The mayor said he is also thankful to the Tinian Municipal Council for coordinating the donation.

Aldan said the children’s park is one of his priorities because it will “enhance youth development and family recreational facilities” on Tinian.

He said his office has applied for a Community Block Development Grant and Technical Assistance Program funding to replace the chain-link fence at the park.

He said there is also a need to repair the concrete benches and picnic tables, build new concrete picnic tables and pavilions, purchase and install more playground equipment including monkey bars, see-saw, slide, tetherball, jungle gym, an adult fitness course, and renovate the bathrooms and changing rooms.

In addition, he wants the park to have basketball and volleyball courts, new lampposts and light fixtures, a site for vendors to sell refreshments, and possibly a splash pad or some other form of recreational water activity for the children.

Aldan said his office is hoping for positive feedback from the two federal grantors by July and August.

The Tinian Children’s Park, he added, will be opened to the public once the installation of new activities/facilities and the renovation of the bathrooms/changing rooms are complete.

He hopes that a ribbon cutting can be held this summer.
