(HANMI) — The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported an 8% average occupancy rate among its 11 member hotels for April 2020. The figure reflects a 90% decrease compared to April 2019, with only 2,015 room nights sold in the month compared to 54,988 last April.

The figure does not include venue rentals related to Covid-19 quarantine accommodations by the government.

A total of 2,015 of 24,573 available room nights sold during the month, compared to 54,988 of 68,935 available room night sold in April 2019. Average room rates were $156.85 compared to $135.00 last April.

“A majority of the few room nights sold in April before the last remaining flight off-island was canceled due to Covid-19 were either residents or federal employees,” said HANMI Chairwoman Gloria Cavanagh. “The 8% average occupancy may seem higher than expected, but only because there was also a significant decrease in the number of total available room nights, as many hotels had either shut down or closed wings or rooms. Compared to available room nights in April 2019, its more like only 3% average occupancy. Although we are facing unprecedented challenges as a community, It’s very encouraging that we have been able to all cooperate to flatten the curve in the Marianas. As a hotel industry, we encourage everyone to avail themselves of free testing being offered so we move toward reopening the economy. We also encourage everyone to continue to comply with social distancing and all related directives so we can protect our community and be ready to bounce back when we are able to resume tourism revenue generation.”

Hotels included in HANMI’s monthly statistical report are Aqua Resort Club, Aquarius Beach Tower, Century Hotel, GrandVrio Resort Saipan, Fiesta Resort & Spa, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Kanoa Resort Saipan, Kensington Hotel Saipan, LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort, Saipan World Resort, and Pacific Islands Club Saipan.

The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands was established in 1985 as a professional forum for the hospitality industry of the CNMI. HANMI also makes regular charitable donations to support non-profit organizations and tourism-related government projects
