MOST of the Saipan Higher Education Finance Assistance recipients studying in the U.S. had not received their scholarship award for the spring 2020 semester, SHEFA board chairman Oscar M. Babauta said on Tuesday.

“But we have no problems with the SHEFA recipients enrolled at [Northern Marianas College],” he added.

In a recent letter to off-island recipients, SHEFA said “there are still no new updates from the Department of Finance available at this time,” but “we will continue to follow up on the status of your award and we will keep you posted if we receive any new information or disbursement dates.”

On Tuesday, Babauta said the checks had already been approved by Finance and would be released soon. “We are now waiting for the Treasury to release the checks,” he added.

Babauta said the SHEFA board has yet to meet to discuss other matters including the request of some parents to use the scholarship award for the plane tickets of students who are “stranded” in the U.S. due to the Covid-19 crisis.

He reiterated that the law does not allow for the reprogramming of SHEFA scholarship grants for any other purpose.

As for the SHEFA board, he said it will find ways to meet and continue the program’s operations while observing the governor’s social distancing directives.
