NORTHERN Marianas College is expected to receive a $1.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, NMC Interim President Frankie Eliptico said.

In his letter to NMC’s over 1,000 students, he said he has received confirmation from USDOE. “Of the $1.8 million, about $920,000 is reserved for NMC students whose lives and education have been disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak.”

He said the grant guidelines indicate that students can use the funds to cover eligible expenses which include course materials, technology, housing, food, healthcare and child care.

"We are working to ensure that we put the funds in the hands of students as soon as possible," Eliptico said.

He added that NMC staff prepared the required documents that were submitted within a day of receiving a notification from USDOE that was communicated by the office of U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan.

The other portion of the grant, the remaining $900,000, will be released by USDOE at a later date when more guidance is made available, Eliptico said.

The grant for NMC is part of the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Recovery, and Economic Security or CARES Act.

Under the CARES Act, USDOE will receive $30.9 billion in Education Stabilization Funds to help schools, students, teachers and families with immediate needs related to the coronavirus.

Of this amount, $14.25 billion will go to colleges and universities to support students and the institutions in coping with the immediate effects of coronavirus and school closures.

“Our college community is thankful for the assistance as the funds will be able to provide NMC students with some financial relief as they continue to face challenges in their pursuit of their college degrees,” Eliptico said.

He advised students to regularly monitor their NMC student emails for announcements and guidance that will be provided over the next few days.
