THERE is no evidence indicating that Covid-19 is being spread through mail, U.S. Postal Service strategic communications specialist Duke Gonzales said, citing information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. surgeon general.

According to Gonzales, WHO stated that “the likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes Covid-19 from a package that has been moved, traveled, and been exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low.”
CDC, for its part, stated that “in general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures. Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets.”
Gonzales also noted that there is no disruption of mail delivery to the CNMI. “I contacted our local USPS transportation manager to get background on this topic. According to that manager, United Airlines subcontracts the transportation of mail to the CNMI, so the suspension of United’s CNMI flights does not impact the movement of mail,” Gonzales said.
He added that USPS has a dedicated Covid-19 command response leadership team that is “focused on employee and customer safety in conjunction with operational and business continuity during this unprecedented epidemic.”
He said USPS continues to follow the strategies and measures recommended by the CDC and public health departments.
The Saipan Post Office currently has 6,036 P.O. boxes.
