The original deadline was Jan. 10.

This year, Mrs. Torres said, the foundation may select four winners and publish two books in Chamorro and two in Carolinian, depending on the quality of the stories that will be submitted.

The competition is open to students from fourth to 12th grades.

“All entries must be originally written in Chamorro and/or Carolinian with English translations,” Mrs. Torres said, adding that one person can submit only one entry.

In the past, she added, an average of 40 students participated in the contest.

The theme for this year is “Our culture, our heritage, our way of life.”

“This contest is designed to develop the technical and creative writing skills of our young authors and help them get published,” Mrs. Torres said.

She added that the young authors will also have the opportunity to experience working with illustrators and editors.

Mrs. Torres is hoping that bilingual teachers will encourage their students to join the contest.
