EUCON International University president Dr. Christian Wei informed lawmakers on Friday about his interest in transforming the former Mariana Resort & Spa in Marpi into an education-tourism destination.

Wei made a presentation in the House of Representatives, about the business plan of his AMCON LLC Hotel Resort, Recreation & Sports, which includes a university town project.

AMCON’s mission, he added, is “to get involved in tourism, education and sports by providing the best hotel and resort, recreation, sports and golf course in terms of customer service, tidiness, ecological awareness, and highly satisfied customers. It visualizes itself as a business that will make CNMI the center of education through tourism and sports.”

Wei said the first phase of AMCON’s proposed investment will amount to $30 million.

House Committee on Commerce and Tourism Chairman Joseph Leepan T. Guerrero said the former Mariana Resort & Spa is a viable place for Wei’s proposal.

“It’s something that is probably doable,” he added.

House Education Committee Chairman Roman Benavente said education tourism is sustainable because foreign students will stay on island for a long period of time, and will spend more compared to ordinary tourists.

“This type of tourism activity is also more decent than the casino,” he added.

He also said that most lawmakers did not know that there is another investor interested in the former Mariana Resort.

“All the Department of Public Lands has been telling us is that only Imperial Pacific International is interested. According to Mr. Wei, they already submitted their proposal to DPL. But DPL is not telling us,” Benavente said.

Variety was unable to get a comment from DPL.
