THE Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board has approved the allocation of $1.3 million for a 90-day extension of Aggreko’s temporary power generation contract.

CUC board chair Miranda Manglona said the money will be taken from the unrestricted account of the public utility.

Originally, under a $1.3 million contract, Aggreko was supposed to operate for 90 days to produce 15 megawatts for CUC while the latter overhauls and/or repairs its power engines.

However, CUC management requested an additional 90 days because the overhaul of engines 5 and 7 will take about 75 days each.

CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho said $43,000 from the additional $1.3 million was used for the installation of a 600-foot fuel pipeline from the power plant to the temporary generator of Aggreko in Lower Base.

The temporary generator arrived on Jan. 16 and has been operating since Saturday, he added.

The temporary power supply from Aggreko will help meet the island’s power demand while some of CUC’s generators and engines are being renovated and/or repaired, Camacho said.
